DeShay Gunter, a nurse at Life Care Center of Crossville, recently received one of Alzheimer’s Tennessee’s Caring Hearts Awards.
The award recognizes unsung heroes in the Upper Columbia region who go above and beyond in caring for patients with memory impairment.
Gunter has been a nurse at Life Care Center of Crossville for more than 10 years and has spent the majority of that time working on the secured memory unit. She is always willing to help the certified nursing assistants, and her fellow employees shared that she is the backbone of that wing.
“DeShay is considered the expert in our building when it comes to anyone with memory issues, behaviors, redirecting, etc.,” said Jean Bennett, business development director at the facility. “She has a natural ability to sense a person’s soul and respond accordingly.”
The award was presented at a luncheon for Alzheimer’s Tennessee on May 16, 2019. Gunter received a certificate, gift bag and plaque.
Associates at Life Care later celebrated Gunter further during all-staff meeting with roses and a standing ovation.
“This award is very humbling because this is what I do on a day-to-day basis,” said Gunter. “My job is so satisfying to know that I can take care of these people. I have been taking care of residents in our secured dementia wing for eight years, and I feel like they are my family. I always think about them and will always help, even if I’m not in the building.”
